Step down

Postby RF_FOX » Mon Mar 08, 2010 6:16 pm

I want to build a test area or bench to play around with car audio. what is the safest and best way to convert 230v (wall) to 12v (car) with the right amperage?

I've heard of it being done with a power supply unit for smaller amps ..

just take the yellow wire and wire it to the (+12V) connection, and wire the black wire to the ground connection. for the remote, just link the yellow wire to it and that acts as the remote. Thats where i out a switch so i can turn the amp on and off. i soldered about six wires together for each connection (except the remote) pm me if you need any help

why oh why does this seem unsafe??? im pretty sure there are step down converters available.
but as with everything in life, its gonna cost.

why not do a google search for one?

http://lmgtfy.com/?q=240v+12v+step+down+converters

the problem is though, they cant supply enough current. so... get another battery, hook a battery charger up and run it from there.
otherwise enjoy your fire hazard!!!

dude if you get a good powersupply, then there is absolutely no chance of a fire hazard. as long as the powersupply supplies a regulated and stable\ voltage then there is no risk.

i personally, would not take that chance.
also, for the same price as aforementioned power supply, a spare battery and charger would be a better AND safer option.
but hey, whatever tickles the fancy!

ok no matter what the load, the corsair will stay stable, and your idea about the battery wont last long at all, and then you have to wait for it to charge back up again...plus its huge and takes up space. there is no safety hazard trust me...

right... no matter what the load hey?

hmmm... lets run 2 morel ultimo subs off a zapco 1100.1 at 2 ohm and see what happens to your power supply.

no hazard? dude, you are smoking your socks!!!

not absurd load, just a huge load (ie 10% over its rated load capacity) now, new PSU's have protective circuitry which just turns the PSU off and pust it into protection as soon as the load becomes too great. dont be a chop and over load it on purpose. calculate what you will use, and plan accordingly

Hey RF-Fox

I have a Spectrum PS4110 - DF1729 step down transformer which I want to sell
http://www.spectrumcom.co.za/radios_powersupplies.html

In a strange coincidence to Purefire's reply, I have run the following from it:
1 x RF Power 600.2
1 x 12" Morel Ultimo Sub

I used it for my home theatre sub for about 1 month without any probems or heat.

This unit weighs about 7kg

i beleive, use the correct tool for the job.
while a PC power supply unit works well for COMPUTERS, its is not the correct source of power for a car audio amplifier.

if you wanna disagree, please be my guest.

oh yes, Zane De Beer's power supply looks to be a better, and safer way of doing what you want to do RF Fox.
